Kay McGregor was a kind and generous woman who believed in the importance of giving back to her community, said her daughter, Barb Mulloy.

“She was constantly volunteering,” Mulloy said. “She was always looking for something to give her time to, and she didn’t expect anything in return.”

Kay McGregor, 76, of Crown Point and formerly of Gary and Merrillville, died Dec. 28, 2012. She retired as a registered nurse from the Merrillville Community School Corporation. She was involved in many community service organizations, including the American Cancer Society.

She sang with the Northwest Indiana Symphony for three years and sang with church choirs for more than 50 years. She was currently a member of Church of the Four Seasons Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Vernon Jones in 1970, and Richard McGregor in 1990.

She was passionate about music, and loved going to outdoor concerts in the park with her friends.

“She would’ve pursued music as a career instead of nursing if she could have,” Mulloy said. “She didn’t sing for money. She did it because she loved it.”

McGregor didn’t let the sorrow of losing two husbands or her own diabetes slow her down, said her daughter.

“I don’t know how she did it. She was constantly going, even as she aged,” she said. “I would get up in the morning and she would already be gone.”

Mulloy said she admired her mother for her never-give-up attitude about life.

“In spite of everything, she still went on,” she said. “She never felt sorry for herself. She never gave up.”
