Bernice Waters was an amazing woman who lived to take care of her family, said her son, Dale Waters.
“We were her life,” he said. “Her family brought her the most joy.”
Bernice Waters, 92, of Portage, died Jan. 3. She was a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and attended Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church.
She was a retired sales clerk manager from Riss Sales in Gary.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Allen Waters, in August 2011.
Waters said his mother had a good sense of humor, loved to help people and loved to joke with them.
She loved sports and went to all her sons’ games. She was a die-hard White Sox fan and a Green Bay Packers fan.
Waters said his parents loved to golf and would regularly golf 36 holes a day.
“They would go to Cressmoor Country Club, walk 18 holes, have lunch, then get a cart and golf 18 more holes,” he said.
They also enjoyed going to the mall to walk in the morning, then gather with friends at Burger King afterward.
“They would solve the world’s problems together,” he said.
Most importantly, Waters was dedicated to her husband and family.
She loved being a grandmother and doted over her granddaughter Laura, who was the first girl in the family.
“She was thrilled to have a girl in the family, after having only boys herself,” he said. “Then when she became a great-grandmother, that was all she talked about with her friends.”
