Ruth Lindquist was a gracious and helpful woman who was loved by everyone who knew her, her son said.
“She treated everyone well and never had a bad word to say,” Kent Lindquist said.
Ruth Lindquist, 100, of Portage, died Dec. 4. She was a 1930 Westville High School graduate and a LaPorte Business College graduate.
She retired in 1972, after working 25 years for the Portage Township school district, where she served as a secretary to several principals and one superintendent.
She was preceded in death by Russell Lindquist, her husband of 61 years. The couple eloped to Columbia City to get married, and were married in Grace Lutheran Church.
They bought a lot in the village of Garyton, which is now Portage. The family moved into the home in 1938, and Ruth Lindquist lived there for 74 years, until she died, her son said.
While she was in high school, she was a member of the girls varsity basketball team. She was a member of the 1929 LaPorte County championship team, he said.
“That was a big thing back in those days,” he said. “She was a very good basketball player during her high school years.”
She and her husband enjoyed traveling, and had been on numerous trips, including trips to California.
Kent Lindquist said he admired his mother for the way she treated other people.
“She was so gracious, civil and helpful to people,” he said. “She treated everyone well.”
