Katrice Brooks was a loyal and true friend who was never afraid to tell it like it is, said her best friend, Jennifer Hawkins.
“She was always a straight-shooter,” said Hawkins, who chose Brooks to be the godmother of her children. “She’d give (my kids) love and kisses, but then she’d put you in your place if she had to. She was willing to give tough love.”
Katrice Brooks, 41, of Valparaiso, died June 10. She was a 1990 graduate of Hobart High School and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Hobart. She had worked 15 years in the casino industry.
She is survived by Bob Brooks, her husband of 14 years.
Brooks was the “young matriarch” for her family, Hawkins said, and was the one who always got her family together.
“She loved to entertain,” Hawkins said. “She would get the family together for holidays or because the wind was blowing.”
She loved cooking and decorating and spending time with her family, her friends and her dogs. She enjoyed going to Valparaiso University basketball games.
Brooks was diagnosed with breast cancer about three years ago, and the cancer eventually spread through her body.
She refused to let her illness define her, her friend said.
Brooks wanted to be treated with dignity and respect, Hawkins said.
“She was totally mentally coherent until the last minute,” Hawkins said. “She was an abundance of strength.”
