Irene Tetreault was an active and outgoing woman, who loved to share her knowledge of artwork with others, said her daughter-in-law, Kathy Stinchfield.

Tetreault grew up on a farm in Valparaiso and was a self-proclaimed tomboy. She especially appreciated artwork that featured the area.

“Her sister’s husband got her interested in art, and she really took to it and fell in love with it,” she said. “She even went to Italy to visit art museums there.”

Irene “Ikey” Tetreault, 89, formerly of Valparaiso, died Dec. 10. She worked 30 years for the Department of Defense.

She was a 1940 graduate of Valparaiso High School and attended Valparaiso University. After her retirement, she returned to Valparaiso in 1983.

She was involved with the Friends of Art, Valparaiso University and was art chairman for the Valparaiso Women’s Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Tetreault, in 1992.

Tetreault was a charismatic woman, her daughter-in-law said.

“She walked into a room, and (everyone) knew she was there,” she said. “She didn’t know a stranger.”

Tetreault always had an opinion, and wasn’t afraid to share her opinions with others.

“Not many people could say it like it was, but Ikey did that,” Stinchfield said. “Everyone always knew where she was coming from.”

Stinchfield said her mother-in-law was always willing to get involved and help out with projects she was passionate about.

“Everyone in town loved her,” she said. “She really had a beautiful life.”
