PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | One person was hospitalized after flames gutted a mobile home early Wednesday morning.
The residents, Mary Windsor and Harold Windsor Jr., were able to get out of the home at 533 Friendship St.
The Porter County Sheriff's Department reports state the home became engulfed in flames.
The residents said their dog smelled smoke and woke them up shortly before 1 a.m. When fire crews arrived a short time later, they found the home fully engulfed with flames originating from the home's north side.
South Haven Fire Chief John Kepshire said Harold Windsor Jr. was uninjured, but the Mary Windsor was transported to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus after inhaling a great deal of smoke.
Kepshire said crews had all flames extinguished by 1:30 a.m., but remained on the scene until 3 a.m. to begin investigating and take care of any possible flare-ups.
Kepshire said the cause of the fire is still unknown. The county's Fire Investigation Strike Team will be reviewing the case to help determine what started the fire. Kepshire said the home, inside the Pleasant Valley development, is likely a total loss.
