INDIANAPOLIS | The Indiana Senate wants a committee to consider moving the May primary earlier in the year to give the state more influence in the presidential election. The committee would also consider having Indiana join other Midwest states for a regional primary.

Last year's Democratic primary between then Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton marked the first time in four decades that Indiana's primary played a significant role in a presidential campaign.

The Republican-controlled Senate unanimously approved the proposal to create a study committee Monday. The measure now heads to the Democrat-ruled House for consideration.
