VALPARAISO | A dozen Valparaiso University students and faculty lay on the grass Friday morning outside Huegli Hall, but they weren't topping off their tans with the last of the summer sun.
The student s, members of a campus organization called Partners for Peace, formed a human peace symbol from 11:10 to 11:50 a.m. to bring attention to the national Iraq Moratorium movement, which is calling for an observance the third Friday of every month.
Jenna Kennedy, a junior at VU and co-president of the group, said the action began on Friday because it was International Day of Peace.
"We want to show our solidarity against all wars," said Kennedy, a international business and political science major from Clarkston, Mich. "We fight the war in a nonviolent manner."
Kennedy said at least 80 students and faculty are members of the group, which meets at 9 p.m. Mondays in the Christopher Center Library. Partners for Peace has organized peaceful protests both in Valparaiso and Indianapolis and often hosts guest speakers at its meetings who discuss the war, Islam, and the history and culture of the Middle East.
Regina Hollingshead, a junior from St. John and public relations coordinator of Partners for Peace, said the group spreads word of its activities at group meetings, through campus fliers, and on Facebook.
"There are not a lot of people of my generation talking about the war," said Hollingshead. "This is a breath of fresh air ... to see people talking about it in this group."
