DNA models, 3-D Pong part of VU open house
The public can experience cutting-edge applications of virtual reality technology at an open house Thursday of Valparaiso University's Scientific Visualization Laboratory.
Tours of the lab begin at 6, 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. and include viewing an array of applications in virtual reality.
There is no charge to attend, but groups of six people or more are asked to make arrangements by calling (219) 464-5185 at least two days in advance.
Organized groups such as class field trips, church youth groups and scouting groups are welcome to schedule a tour.
Visitors will see 3-D electromagnetic fields, explore anatomy models and look at 12-foot-wide DNA molecules, with professors and students on hand to answer questions. Visitors also will have the chance to play 3-D Pong and CAVE Quake.
The laboratory is located in Gellersen Center, Room 182, on the southeast corner of campus, off U.S. 30 and Sturdy Road.
More open houses are scheduled Feb. 28, March 27 and April 24.

PNC's spring semester enrollment hits record
Purdue University North Central enrolled a spring semester record 3,650 students this semester. The figure is an increase of 6 percent over last spring, the university reported.
Of the total, 87 students are in graduate programs, including 77 students in the PNC master of business administration program. The MBA program grew by 12 students. Students are taking a total of 37,480 credit hours, an increase of almost 5 percent over the previous high of 35,752 set in spring 2007.
Full-time students taking 12 or more credit hours numbered 2,075. Minority enrollment numbered 546 students, almost 15 percent of the overall student body.
Enrollment at PNC-Porter County in Valparaiso grew to 638 students.

Academic event at VU tests facts on Europe
Members of the Northwest Indiana community are invited to test their knowledge of European politics, history, geography and culture during an Academic Super Bowl on Feb. 5 at Valparaiso University.
Participants will form into teams at the beginning of the quiz bowl and engage in a friendly competition.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in the university's student union on campus. The event is open to the public, and there is no charge to participate.

Science, engineering fair needs volunteers
Science fair helpers sought
Community volunteers are sought to help with the 55th annual Northwestern Indiana Science and Engineering Fair on March 29 at Valparaiso University.
Volunteers are needed to serve as judges for middle and high school science and engineering projects and to assist with other tasks. Volunteers need not be a professional scientist or engineer to serve as a judge.
Those interested should fill out the online registration form for judges by Feb. 8 at valpo.edu/events/nwisef.
