City's annual auction is scheduled for Saturday

The city of Portage will have its annual city auction Saturday at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road.

Viewing of items will be from 8 to 10 a.m. with the auction beginning at 10 a.m. Up for auction are used vehicles, bicycles, radios, DVD players, cameras, computer equipment, office equipment, video recorders, sporting items, jewelry, tools, a snowblower, hubcaps, new clothing, DVDs and CDs.

VHS student earns way to scholarship semifinal

Valparaiso High School senior Brian Aggrey was among more than 1,600 black high school seniors who have been designated semifinalists in the 45th annual Achievement Scholarship competition announced this week by the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The students will compete for approximately 800 scholarships worth more than $2.6 million to be awarded in the spring. The National Achievement Program, conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corp., is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize promising black students throughout the nation.

World's Fair homes on display at the Dunes

The annual architectural tours at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore featuring homes from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, A Century of Progress, will be held Oct. 11 and 12.

The guided tours are limited in size and are by reservation only. Reservations are being accepted now at historiclandmarks.org. Tickets are $10 per person. Tour times will be assigned when making reservations. Parking information and tickets will be mailed later.

The Chicago World's Fair, A Century of Progress, was organized around the theme of science and its role in industrial development. The fair's model homes featured revolutionary materials, innovative building methods, modern home appliances, and new construction techniques.

Women Voters to give guidelines about voting

The League of Women Voters of Porter County will be at the Wiseway grocery, 2168 U.S. 30, Valparaiso from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday to register voters, to answer questions about registration, absentee voting, early voting, IDs needed at the polling place, etc.

Voters Registration office can be reached at 465-3485. If you have moved or changed your name since you last voted you need to correct the information by contacting Voter Registration before Oct. 6. On Election Day, you will need to have with you a photo ID.

H.S. Powder Puff game moved to October 12

The Wheeler High Powder Puff football game scheduled for Saturday has been postponed to Oct. 12 because of scheduling conflicts.

Residents encouraged to turn in their waste

A special household hazardous waste and electronics collection to assist Porter County residents affected by the recent flood has been set up by the Recycling and Waste Reduction District. The collection will be at the parking lot of the old Dollar General Store, 6270 Central Ave., Portage.

Collection dates and times are:

Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday through Oct. 3, 8 a.m. to 4 :30 p.m.

Oct. 4, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Oct. 6 through Oct. 10, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Oct. 11, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Porter County residents affected by the flood working to clear their homes of storm damaged debris should bring household hazardous waste and electronics to the collection.

This collection will only accept the these household hazardous waste and electronics. Household Hazardous Waste: household batteries (no car batteries), paints, pesticides, cleaners, oils, solvents, antifreeze, corrosives, mercury devices and thermometers, gasoline, oxidizers, poisons, aerosols, fluorescent bulbs, unwanted medication and ammunition. Electronics, televisions, television components, computers, computer components, telephones, copiers, stereos and radios that have been damaged by the floods.

They will not accept any trash or water damaged items other than those listed above. This collection is for Porter County flood victims only.

Catholic church to hold pork chop dinner Sat.

YMCA invites public to new building celebration

The public is invited to see the new YMCA from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 1201 Cumberland Crossing.

During the Y-Apalooza event, the YMCA will be offering membership discounts of up to 60 percent.

Participants will be entertained by local bands (Kicks, Tainted Fish, C4, All Tooned Up) and musical groups throughout the day. Food and beverages will be available on site.
