Locked out woman enters residence through pet door

CHESTERTON | Chesterton police responded to a disturbance Monday evening at a home on south 21st Street and spoke to a man who said he locked his wife out of the house because she was having an affair, but she gained entry by crawling through the pet door.

The woman told police her husband pushed her and threatened to kill her, but he denied doing that. The police report is being forwarded to prosecutors for consideration of charges.

Wife alleging forced sex seeks protective order and charges

CHESTERTON | A woman who lives on Carrick Lane told police Monday that she got into an argument with her husband because of his infidelity and he battered her.

The woman also told police her husband forced her to have sex. The woman obtained a protective order against her husband and she is seeking criminal charges against him.

Woman, 67, accused of DUI while trying to deliver vodka

PORTAGE | Portage police said a woman they arrested on a drunken driving charge stated she was in a hurry to get to her sister's house because her sister needed a bottle of vodka.

And, once the woman realized she was being arrested, she asked officers if they would take the vodka to her sister, police said. Police said they told the woman they would not transport the alcohol.

The woman, Gleneva Koontz, 67, of 952 Camelot Manor, Portage, was arrested near her home about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Police said Koontz was arrested after she backed out of her driveway and struck a tow truck parked in the roadway and a garbage can.

Police said Koontz stated she drinks all day, and on this day drank at the Moose Lodge, but left for a few minutes to get a bottle of vodka to take to her sister. Police said her blood-alcohol concentration was about twice the standard of intoxication in Indiana.

Donation box for charity stolen from store's checkout counter

VALPARAISO | The owner of Lifestyles, 122 E. Lincolnway, reported Monday that someone stole a donation box from the checkout counter at the store.

The owner told police a review of the store's surveillance footage shows a white male with dark hair, wearing a black coat and a baseball cap stole it at 10:43 a.m. March 3.

The donation box, the proceeds of which were to benefit the Hilltop House charity, contained about $110.

Heroin addict stole radio from brother for cash, police allege

PORTAGE | Portage police said they arrested an 18-year-old Portage man Monday night after he stole his brother's radio to sell it for drug money.

Craig Shaefer, of 5255 Concord, was arrested on charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Shaefer stated he is a heroin addict and was found in possession of paraphernalia.

Trio from Portage arrested on drug charges after traffic stop

PORTAGE | Portage police said they arrested three people on drug charges after stopping a car at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday in the 5900 block of Central Avenue.

Police said they discovered marijuana and a white powder that tested positive for opiates in the car.

The driver, Elizabeth Broadie, 18, was arrested along with passenger Brendan Gill, 21, both of Portage, and Jacob D. Martinez, 19, of Portage and West Lafayette.

All three were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. Gill also was arrested on a maintaining a common nuisance charge, while Broadie and Martinez also were arrested on visiting a common nuisance charges.

Correctional officer is accused of trafficking with an offender

MICHIGAN CITY | Indiana State Prison Superintendent William Wilson reported that a female correctional officer was arrested after attempting to traffic a cell phone with an offender.

Correctional officer Dawn L. Walker, of LaPorte County, was reporting for work Wednesday morning when another prison employee found the cell phone wrapped and hidden in what appeared to be oatmeal.   

She will be charged with trafficking with an offender, a felony.
