VALPARAISO | Environmental issues affecting communities in Northwest Indiana and Asian nations will be the subject of two public lectures Friday at Valparaiso University.

A new network promoting stewardship of the Great Lakes region is the topic of a talk by Erin Argyilan, whose research focuses on climate variability and its impact on the water level of the Great Lakes. Her talk is at 2 p.m. in the Neils Science Center.

Argyilan, a professor of geosciences at Indiana University Northwest, recently developed a community-based network for monitoring water level in Ogden Dunes to address recent flooding issues.

Results from a two-year study assessing the influence of Chinese pollution on air quality in Japan will be presented by VU physics and astronomy professor Gary Morris in a talk at 3:20 p.m. in the same location. Both talks are free and open to the public. -- By Times Staff
