NURSERY SCHOOL REGISTRATION | Valparaiso

ABC Magic Nursery School, a division of Horizon Gymnastics Center, is taking open registration for the 2010 to 2011 school years. The school day begins with a 30-minute class in gymnastics and sports fitness taught by trained gymnastics staff; followed by two hours in the academic classroom with director Linda Dickinson. Registration times are 9 a.m. to 7 p;m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at 1254 Horse Prairie Ave.

OUTDOOR SOCCER | Portage

Registration is now taking place for Portage Township YMCA’s Outdoor Youth Soccer League. The league is for ages 3-7. Practices will take place during the week with games on Saturday’s.  The league runs from April 5 through May 15.  Shin guards are recommended.  Cost is $25 for Primary Plus Members, $33 for Primary Members and $66 for others.

 KIWANIS MEETING | Chesterton

The Chesterton/Duneland Kiwanis Club meets at noon Feb. 26 at the Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Ave. Laura Layman, vice president of the Duneland Business Initiative, will be discussing the group and its upcoming festivals, specifically the Bicycle Blast.

PANCAKES AND SAUSAGE | Porter Twp.

Salem United Methodist Church of Porter Township will sponsor all all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Feb. 27 at Salem Fellowship Hall, 756 W. County Road 350 South. Cost is $6 for adults; $4 for ages 5 to 12 and 4 and younger eat for free.

BOWL-A-THON | Portage

The Portage Township YMCA is planning its 21st annual bowl-a-thon for noon Feb. 28 at Camelot Bowl. Pick up registration packets now. Entry fee is $60 per team.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT | Chesterton

Liberty Bible Church hosts an event for girls of all ages. "Girls Night Out" will feature Shelley Hitz, author of "Mirror, Mirror,... Am I Beautiful?" She will speak on "true beauty." The event is 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. march 5 at Liberty Bible Church, 824 N. Calumet Ave. Cost is $6; purchase tickets by Feb. 28 from the Liberty Bookstore from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and in the Hall of Nations on Sundays after church services.

PENSION BENEFITS | Valparaiso

Porter County Aging & Community Services will host a presentation on “What You Don’t Know about the VA ‘Improved Pension’ Can Be Hazardous to Your Health!” by Jeff McBride, Professional Member of the American Association for Wartime Veterans, at noon March 1 at the Campbell Street Cafe, 4245 Meridian Woods Drive. McBride will explain the VA Improved Pension Benefit available to seniors who served in the military during the war and to their spouses. This is a free 60-minute presentation that is open to the public. A lunch catered by Pines Village Retirement Communities will be provided to all who RSVP to attend.

BASKET WEAVING | Portage

A basket weaving class will be conducted by Margie Warner at 9:15 a.m. March 6 at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. the project for this class is a newspaper basket. Fold newspapers in half and leave for recycling. The cost of all materials is $30. A nonrefundable deposit of $10 is required at the time of registration. The class will be limited to 12 people.

CABIN FEVER | Portage

The Portage High School athletic department is hoping people will break from the winter doldrums, have a little fun and raise some money for PHS athletes. A committee of sports parents and community representatives are organizing the first Indians Cabin Fever to be held from 7 to 11 p.m. March 6 in the Oakwood Room of Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road. The adults only event will feature food, music, cash bar, silent auction and the Big Red Raffle. Tickets are $20 per person and provides admission to the event and entry to the raffle.

BUS TRIP | Portage

The Polonica Pilgrimage Society will host a "Polonia" bus trip to Chicago on March 10. The luxury coach will depart at 8;45 a.m. from Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road, and will also pick up passengers at 9:15 a.m. from All Saints Catholic Church, 570 Sibley St., in Hammond. Return times will be approximately 5 p.m. to Hammond and at 5:30 p.m.

ANTIQUES AND COLLECTIBLES | Porter County

 Mental Health America of Porter County is accepting applications from antique and collectibles dealers interested in securing booth space at the annual Antique and Collectible show set for 9 a.m. mto 4 p.m. March 13 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14 at the Porter County Expo Center at State Road 49 and Division Road .Proceeds from the show will benefit the many programs and services of Mental Health America of Porter County a nonprofit organization promoting mental wellness in our community through advocacy, education, resource and support services.

NEW PROGRAMS | Portage

Louise Thomspon, Community Services Liaison with the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Indiana Chapter, will present information about two new programs at 2:30 p.m. March 16 at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. The Silver Alert program, similar to the Amber Alert for missing children, notifies the public when an adult who has dementia or meets other criteria is reported missing. The Safe Return program utilizes specially designed jewelry that enables first responders to identify wandering adults and return them safely home.

OIL PAINTING | Portage

an all day beginning oil painting class, taught by Susan Young is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 20 at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. The project is a spring flower with a watering can.Registration and payment of $55 is requested.
