VALPARAISO | Applications are now being accepted from charity organizations interested in sharing in proceeds from the annual Mayor's Charity Ball to be held July 26 at Central Park Plaza.

The event has been held in September each year since Jon Costas was first elected, but it will be held earlier this year in hope of getting warmer weather. Last year's theme was Beach Ball, but the weather was cold and rainy right up to the start of the ball, and it remained cold and damp the rest of the evening.

Fire pits were set up as part of the Beach Ball ambiance, but organizers had a hard time keeping them lit. The theme of this year's ball is yet to be determined.

"The charity ball committee along with Mayor Costas felt the event being held at Central Park Plaza was a great atmosphere last year," committee member Lori Good said. "The weather, however, was not so special in late September."

The application, which is available at City Hall, on the city's website at www.valpo.us or on the city's Facebook page at Valparaiso Now, asks charities to include information on the amount of money they are requesting and, if it is needed for a specific project, the total cost of the project.

Good said the committee hopes to use the proceeds more efficiently and help as many groups as possible.

"The application was developed as a way for organizations to send in their information without needing to write a lengthy letter," Good said.

Deadline for applications is March 1. For more information, contact Good at City Hall, (219) 548-4822.
