VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police said a homeless man who received services from New Creation Men's Center, an organization that helps homeless men, burglarized two apartments near the center.
Richard Shoback, 46, who lists his address at his father's Portage home, was arrested Monday on charges of burglary and possession of marijuana.
Valparaiso police Detective Philip Rochon said Shoback had stolen property and marijuana in his belongings at New Creation.
The burglaries were discovered the afternoon of July 7 at a two-unit apartment house in the 400 block of Courtney St.
Police received a report that someone stole a video game console and other items that were left behind when one of the apartments was vacated. In addition, two watches and other items were stolen from the other apartment, which is rented by Richard Leunsford.
Police said the owner of the apartment house asked neighbors if they saw anything, and they stated they didn't see anything suspicious, but they had been looking around the garage of the burglarized building. The owner thought that was suspicious and told police.
Rochon said he questioned Shoback, who knows the neighbors and was spending time there, and reportedly got him to admit he committed the burglaries. Times archives show Shoback has a lengthy criminal record, including prior arrests on drug and property crime charges.
Police have arrested several people who receive services from New Creation, including a man who was arrested Saturday on a public intoxication charge after police received a report of an intoxicated man refusing to leave Town & Country Market. That man, Don Jordan, 51, had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.485, which is six times the legal standard of intoxication in Indiana, police said.
