VALPARAISO | Hobart resident Jason Odell told the court Tuesday he has left alcohol and drugs behind and is now a changed man.
But the change came too late for Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper, who cited Odell's lengthy criminal record before sentencing the 37-year-old to the 10-year maximum prison term. The sentence, which was called for in his plea agreement, stems from an August home burglary in Portage.
Odell pleaded guilty to a felony burglary charge that typically carries a sentence of between six and 20 years behind bars.
The burglary occurred in the 5600 block of West County Road 700 North. Police said a neighbor gave a description of a man who had been at the home, and police saw Odell walking nearby with stolen items in his possession.
Police said Odell stole $1,133 worth of items, including a camera, jewelry and coins.
He told the court Tuesday all the items were returned to the residence.
Deputy Prosecutor Cheryl Polarek requested the maximum 10-year sentence, pointing out Odell's prior convictions for two felonies and nine misdemeanors. She said Odell also has criminal cases still pending and has proven he does not comply with the rules of probation.
Defense attorney Matt Soliday sought the minimum six years behind bars, arguing Odell admitted his guilt to the most severe charge he faced and is remorseful.
Harper said other courts had given Odell shots at treatment for substance abuse.
While giving him the maximum sentence possible under the plea agreement, Harper said she would recommend placing him in a therapeutic community behind bars.
"I think you need it," she said.
The placement will give him the chance to work more quickly toward an early release, she said.
