CHESTERTON | A roll-over accident about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ind. 49 and the Indiana Toll Road forced the closure of northbound Ind. 49 for about 90 minutes.
Chesterton police Lt. David Cincoski said a truck driver who was hauling tandem trailers was exiting the Toll Road and turning onto northbound Ind. 49 when the second trailer overturned, spilling a small quantity of the cargo it was carrying.
A hazardous materials responder was called to the scene because it wasn't immediately known if the spilled material was dangerous. The responder, Porter County Assistant Environmental Coordinator Greg Eckhardt, said the flammable ethyl acetate on the trailer did not spill, but some of the one gallon containers of swimming pool chemical did spill.
Eckhardt said about five gallons of the liquid leaked. An absorbent material absorbed and evaporated the spill. Eckhardt and Cincoski both said it did not pose a threat.
Ind. 49 was closed at U.S. 6 while the scene was cleaned up. Cincoski said there were no injuries.
Chesterton police and Eckhardt were joined by Indiana State Police, Chesterton and Liberty Township firefighters and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The accident's cause wasn't immediately determined. The name of the driver and other details were not available.
