The Indiana State Police for the Lowell District are planning a sobriety checkpoint and patrols aimed at stopping drunken drivers on St. Patrick's Day.
The checkpoint will take place late in the evening March 17. Drivers stopped at the checkpoint will be required to produce a valid license and registration. Motorists that are not impaired can expect only short delays of two to three minutes while passing through.
If all information is correct and there is no other reason to be detained, the driver will be released. After the checkpoint is over, troopers will conduct roving saturation patrols seeking impaired drivers throughout the entire district.
Police are encouraging all drivers to call 911 or the closest state police post or police department to report impaired motorists. Callers should be prepared to give a description of the vehicle, location and direction of travel.
The checkpoint and patrols are being conducted through a partnership with the Indiana State Police and the Northern Porter County Traffic Safety Partnership.
