VALPARAISO | Willow Cataldo and Jenna Kosky hope their summers will be filled will lots of young adults coming to the library.

Cataldo, head of youth services at the Valparaiso Public Library, is assisted by Jenna Kosky.

They want more teens and young adults to come to the library this summer and participate in some of the programs it is offering.

"This age group (sixth grade and older) is a more challenging group," said Cataldo. "There is so much competition for their attention including music, Ipods and video games."

But the two hope that they have some activities planned that the kids can relate to.

Some of the young adult programs this summer include a repurposed tote program at 2 p.m. June 18. The group will fuse together plastic store bags to create unique and colorful tote bags. Registration for this programs begins in person June 4. A $3 fee is due at registration.

Next is the book discussion at 7:30 p.m. June 24 at Uptown Cafe. "Eclipse" will be discussed. This book is part of the Twilight series. Registration begins June 9 and the first 12 people to register in person will receive a free copy of the book.

Artist trading cards is the event planned for 2 p.m. July 9. Come collage, paint or draw a set of artist trading cards. These works of art are to be traded with other artists. Kids can bring supplies to work in a particular medium. Registration begins in person June 25 and $3 is due at that time.

A pizza party will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 21. This is for all the young adults who successfully complete the summer reading program.

Kosky hopes that with their staff and with the types of programs they are offering, young adults will want to attend these programs.

Besides these programs, Cataldo and Kosky are looking for volunteers for the adopt-a-shelf program. This is for students who have completed grade 6 and up. They must attend a training session at 2 p.m. June 8 or 10 a.m. June 11. The volunteers will assist with shelving.

For information about the programs or about volunteering, call the library at (219) 462-0524, ext. 4 or visit the library at 103 Jefferson St. The library also offers programs for younger children at the library. Visit www.pcpls.lib.in.us to find out more.
