Chesterton High School’s Adult Enrichment is offering several new and different enrichment courses this Spring 2010 semester. Interested participants may register Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
beginning on Monday, January 4 at CHS Assistant Principals' Office, 2125 S. 11th Street or at evening registration on Wednesday, Jan. 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the CHS Main Entrance.
Registration can be made in person or by mail. Mail-in forms are available on the back of the CHS Adult Enrichment brochure. All fees of
$5 per instructional hour must be paid at registration or must accompany the registration form if mailed. Some courses have an additional material fee or refundable book deposit.
Courses offered:
WOODS I: This class is for the beginner woods student. Emphasis is placed on proper machinery use and on simple furniture construction. The techniques of working with wood will be taught including construction, repair, finishing and refinishing. Classes will meet 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 22 through April 16.
WOODS II: This class is for the intermediate to advanced woods student.
The students should understand the knowledge of woodworking and the machinery. Classes will meet 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 22 through April 16.
THE WAR ON TERROR: FROM ISLAM TO IRAQ: The War on Terror: From Islam to Iraq will cover all of the necessary topics to truly understand the current situation in the War on Terror.It will seek to teach the roots of Islam and its role in Osama Bin Ladin’s Jihad, the first Persian Gulf War, September 11th, the Patriot Act, and the War in Afghanistan. Classes will be held 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 24 and 26.
WORLD WAR II: A study of the causes, the course and the implications of World War II. It will handle the geographic areas involved, the major diplomatic, political and military events, and some of the key figures of the war from both the Allies and the Axis powers. Post –war and present day impacts from the conflict will also be examined. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays.
OBTAINING A DEGREE ONLINE: Find what degrees are offered from various universities across the country. Class will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 22.
STAINED GLASS METHODS: Learn the terms and techniques used in the making of stained glass. Students will learn to design, score glass, break glass, foiling method, how to solder, and more. All materials will be made available for purchase through the instructor. However, students may choose to bring or purchase materials themselves. Cost of glass will vary dependent upon project. Base cost for all other materials will be $30. Class will meet 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 22 through March 5.
FUSED GLASS MOBILE: Create an “Alexander Calder Inspired Mobile” made from fused glass. Learn the technique of fused glass and how to design and create your own mobile. Use of the glass cutting tools and grinders will be covered as well as jewelry and wire-forming tools. Additional cost of materials is $20-$25. Class will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 20, Feb. 2 and 10.
E-BAY BUYING AND SELLING: This class will teach the finer points of buying and selling items on Ebay. This is a two-night class meeting from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 3 and 10.
COMPUTER BUILDING: With this course people will be able to assess which computer components best suit your own personal needs, find the best places to purchase parts for your PC, and then build it yourself. The course will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. every Thursday; however, each course will be self-contained.
HOME LANDSCAPING: This class will cover such topics as landscaping entryways, retaining walls, decks, patios and water features. It will also cover perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs, and evergreen trees.
BEGINNER SEWING: Learn how to use a sewing machine. Threading and using machine, pattern reading, cutting, fitting & fabricating ideas.This class is taught by a community mother who has been sewing since she was 10.
LEARN TO PLAY FOLK GUITAR: Campfire songs to protest songs, beginners to advanced. Songs by Woody Guthrie, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Join the circle and learn to play acoustic guitar.
LEARN TO PLAY OLD TIME FIDDLE - Barn dance fiddle basics and toe-tapping fiddling tips and tricks to keep them dancing. Bring your own fiddle.
Old time favorites taught by Tom Towle: Time Tuesday and Thursday 7:00-8:00 p.m.
COMMUNICATE WITH PASSION AND UNDERSTANDING: Learn the fundamentals that will set you firmly on a foundation of understanding gleaned from the most recent research at Northwestern University, Evanston Illinois.
Breakthrough techniques to improve relationships, understand children and parents, understand business partners and own thoughts. Includes deep listening to improve skills.
