SOUTH HAVEN | Porter County police on Thursday arrested a teen who they say had a knife and was planning to go to Portage High School and harm a fellow student.
The suspect, a 17-year-old boy who lives on Timberline Parkway in South Haven, was arrested on felony charges of intimidation and resisting arrest. The boy was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, and it wasn't immediately known if he would face adult charges, police Lt. Chris Eckert said.
Police responded to the boy's home about 10 a.m. Thursday after the boy's father reported the boy had a knife and was trying to leave so he could go to the high school and harm a student.
Police said they arrived and were confronted in the kitchen area by the teen, who had a 5-inch knife. Police said they repeatedly ordered the teen to drop the knife, but he refused. Police said the teen advanced toward the officers, wielding the knife in an aggressive manner.
Officer Tim Bell shocked the boy with a Taser. Bell and Cpl. Ryan Fenters then took him into custody. Police said the investigation showed the boy wanted to harm a female student due to a prior problem.
Eckert credited the boy's father and the responding police officers with safely ending the situation.
