TODDLER TIME | Valparaiso

Registration for the Valparaiso Public Library Winter Toddler Time for ages 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 begins today.  The seven-week session will start Feb. 3 through March 18. Times offered:  9:30 or 11 a.m. Wednesdays or Thursdays. Books, fingerplays, songs, activities, and crafts are included with each weeks'  theme based Toddler Time.  There is a $3 registration fee. To register, vis it in person or call.

PRESCHOOL PREVIEW | Chesterton

Westchester Public Library will sponsor a Preschool Preview Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Westchester Public Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Ave. Faculty members from Duneland area preschools will be on hand to distribute information and answer questions concerning their school’s philosophy, curriculum, tuition costs, and enrollment procedures. The program is free and open to the public.

PRESCHOOL PREVIEW NIGHT | Valparaiso

Valparaiso Public Library will host its annual Preschool Preview Night in meeting Room A and B from 6 to 8 p.m.m Jan. 21. The purpose of the preview night is to familiarize parents about Valparaiso's preschools. Staff from area preschools will be on hand to discuss their programs, curriculum and philosophies. This is an open house and participants are welcome to come any time within the 2-hour time slot.

OPEN HOUSE | Valparaiso

Valparaiso High School will hold its annual eighth grade parent information open house from 6 to 7 p.m. Jan. 21 in the auditorium. The program will provide parents of incoming freshmen with information about course selection, graduation requirements, extra-curricular activities and procedures regarding the transition from middle school to high school. Informational letters containing student schedules have been mailed to the parents of current 8th graders from all public and private middle schools in Valparaiso who will attend Valparaiso High School starting with the 2010 - 2011 school year. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening in the school cafeteria.  It is the hope of Valparaiso High School staff that parents will be able to attend.

League of Women Voters meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at Susie's Cafe. The topic will be on the census and how it is done. call to place an early lunch order.

OPEN HOUSE | Valparaiso

Our Littlest Angels Preschool will hold an open house from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in Wesley Hall, room 103 of First United Methodist Church, 103 Franklin St. Parents and children will see the classrooms and meet the teachers and aides. Registration for the 2010-2011 school year will be accepted at this time. Enter the church using the doors off of Chicago Street.

SOUP AND SALAD | South Haven

Our Lady of Sorrows will hold an all-you-can-eat soup, salad and bread luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at the church, 356 W. County Road 700 North. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children; hot dogs E$1.

LYRIC OPERA | Portage

The sixth in this season's lectures presented by the Lyric Opera of Chicago at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St., will be "Elixir of Love", by Donizetti, at 7 p.m. Jan. 25. A trained lecturer will give background information about both the composer and the story, as well as play musical highlights.

POLISH CULTURE | Portage

The Polish-American Cultural society of Northwest Indiana meets Jan. 27 at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. Participants may attend one or both topics of discussion: 5 to 7 p.m. Polish language for beginners of any age; 7 to 8 p.m. Polish culture, customs, history and geography topics as well as intermediate Polish language.

A free seminar on health care for small business owners, individuals, families and the self-employed begins at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at Hoosier Healthcare, 2590 Morthland Drive. CHURCH BASKETBALL LEAGUE | Portage

The Portage Township YMCA will be running a church basketball league beginning Jan. 29. Registration is now open. All games will be played between 6 and 10 p.m. mon Fridays. Teams must have a minimum of 5 players with a maximum of 12. Cost is $150 per team.

BENEFIT WALK | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso School of Law Running club and Law Libertarians of Valparaiso are heading a 5K benefit run/walk for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The event begins at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Old Fairgrounds Park on Calumet Avenue. There is no entrance fee to participate but donations are encourages. Refreshments will follow. All proceeds will be donated to CARE, Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere, Inc.

BIG BAND DANCE | Valparaiso

The 14th annual big band dance is from 8 to 11 p.m. Jan. 30 at Valparaiso High School cafeteria. Cost is $8 per person and includes soft drinks and snacks. music performed includes jazz, swing, Latin and big band-style music reminiscent of the dance band era of the 1930s and 40s.

COUNTRY BREAKFAST | Porter Twp.

Salem United Methodist Church of Porter Township will sponsor an all-you-can-eat country breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at Salem Fellowship Hall, 756 W. County Road 350 South, across from the church. Cost is $6 for adults; $4 for ages 5 to 12. Proceeds go to supporting the missions of the church.
