VALPARAISO | A Portage woman will avoid any further jail time after pleading guilty to felony counts of attempting to keep $72,000 mistakenly placed in her bank account and for selling or leasing the same home numerous times.
Jill Willey, 32, was sentenced Monday by Porter Superior Judge Roger Bradford to 5 1/2 years in prison, with all but time served to be suspended. Willey will be placed on formal probation.
The deal between prosecutors and defense attorney Bob Harper also calls for Willey to take part in a day reporting program, pay restitution and write letters of apology to all victims within two months.
Willey pleaded guilty to fraud on a financial institution after police discovered she wrote checks with $72,000 that mistakenly was placed in her account at Chase Bank.
Willey reportedly told police that after she called the bank in 2007 and it assured her there was no error, she wrote nine checks for a car, a home spa and a deposit in another bank. She later admitted to knowing the deposit was an error and to attempting to hide and spend the money, police said.
She also pleaded guilty to two felony counts of theft for pretending to own a home she was renting and then proceeding to sell or lease it to several people.
Police said Willey pulled the scam by listing the home for sale or lease on the Craigslist Web site in October 2007.
