AAUW MEETING | Valparaiso
The Literary Study Group of American Association of University Women, Valparaiso Branch, will meet at 7 tonight at the Valparaiso Public Library to discuss the novel, "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult, about bullying leading up to a school shooting. The discussion leader will be Carolyn Hardebeck, accompanied by Jerry Kirby of CASS, an organization dedicated to stop bullying in the Valparaiso Community Schools who will share what is being done to prevent such a tragedy in the community.

WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR | Valparaiso
The Collings Foundation's WWII B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator and P-51 Mustang will be available for rides and tours from noon to 6 p.m. today; 10 a.m. To 6 p.m. July 28 and 10 a.m. to noon on July 29 at the Porter County Airport, 4207 Murvihill Road. Ground tours are $12 for adults and $6 for children. B-17 and B-24 rides are a $425 donation and flights aboard the P-51 are a $2200/ $3200 donation depending on duration. Donations are tax-deductible.

WASTE REDUCTION WORKSHOP | Portage
A 4 R's Waste Reduction Workshop will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 29 at the Portage Library, 2665 Irving St. The four R's are reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink. Learn the rules of recycling, see photos of the recycling process in action and learn the proper way to get rid of items and gain resources to help reduce waste. There is a $10 fee. This workshop is sponsored by the Portage Public Library and the Recycling & Waste Reduction District of Porter County. Call to register.

COMMUNITY FESTIVAL | South Haven
American Legion Post 502 is hosting a community festival from noon to 11 p.m. Aug. 1 at 429 W. County Road 750 North. There will be food, children's games, bingo, horse shoes, beer garden, Guitar Hero tourney and bands featuring Silverswitch and five Guys Named Moe. there also will be fireworks and a reverse raffle.

AUGUST RUSH | Portage
Portage 1st United Methodist Church will have a day-long summer celebration event for the family beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 8. Events include: Car Show, Baseball Camp for kids, Live Music, Slow-Pitch Softball games, carnival games, a dunk tank, inflatable jumpers, face painting, food, fun, and more.
Starting at 4:30 p.m., local comedian Don Tersigni will take the stage, followed by up and coming Christian Music Group Sidewalk Prophets.
Tickets for the day's events are $10 (13 and older), $5.00 (ages 2-12), and free for children under the age 2. Tickets will cost $5. more the day of the event. The church is located at 2637 McCool Road.

American Legion Post 502 hosts a Sunday breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at 429 W. County Road 750 North. The all-you-can-eat breakfast includes biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs, pancakes, toast, French toast stix and drinks. Cost is $6 per person with reduced children's prices.

Porter County Aging & Community Services will host a presentation on Alzheimer's Association of Greater Indiana at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Campbell Street Cafe, 4245 Meridian Woods Drive. Louise Thompson will present a program called, "Maintain Your Brain," which is about living a brain healthy lifestyle. This workshop will cover specific things you can do to maintain your brain. This is a free presentation that is open to the public.

TWO ART CLASSES | Valparaiso
Painted Dunes Decorative Artists club will offer a fabric painting class Aug. 11. Deadline to sign up is July 25 and the cost is $12.50. The second class is July 25, an all-day class with Candace Larson who will teach an acrylic folk art design on a wooden surface called "painting lady color wheel." Cost is $17 and the deadline is July 18. The classes will be held at the new Holiday Inn Express, 1251 Silhavy Road.
