CARDIOVASCULAR SYMPOSIUM | Munster
To raise awareness of the detrimental effects of stress on cardiovascular health, the Cardiovascular Research program of Community Healthcare System is offering a free symposium to the public from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 10 at the Centre for the Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Dr. Glen Wurglitz and Acharya Vivek Gupta will talk about stress in relation to health. Through his presentation "Stress and its Impact on Cardiovascular and Mental Health," Glen Wurglitz, PsyD, will discuss how stress affects cardiovascular and mental health, and, provide ways to better manage stress. As director of Behavioral Health Services at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Dr. Wurglitz, himself a National Guard member, counsels veterans who have returned home to Northwest Indiana after serving overseas. "Making Stress Work for You" is the subject of spiritual leader Archarya Vivek Gupta’s presentation. A practitioner of the ancient wisdom of Vedanta, he will discuss how people from all walks of life can attain the ultimate goal of self-realization or unconditional happiness. "Bits and Bytes" will continue fro 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 27 at Westchester Public Library, with "Computer Basics 1." Attendees will meet in the Bertha Wood meeting room on the second floor of Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Ave. The class is free, but registration is required as computer stations are limited to 15. The class is a beginner’s entry level class that will introduce the user to the computer. Attendees will learn how to handle the mouse, the difference between hardware and software, programs that are available and desktop shortcuts. Additional features will also be discussed and demonstrated. A waiting list will be maintained for an additional class should there be a need.

Valparaiso Community Festivals & Events is looking for local artistic talent. For the second year, artists will have the opportunity to compete and have their artwork featured in the festival’s promotional campaign. The winning entry will receive a $1,000 grand prize as well as significant exposure during the 2010 Popcorn Festival season as the centerpiece on all promotional material. Second place will receive a $300 cash prize. All accepted entries will be on display at the new Valparaiso University Harre Union from April 19 to 26. Deadline is noon April 13.
