Stewart completes mission

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Slavica V. Stewart, daughter of Ruzica and Lazar Vujanic, of Crown Point, was at sea for 24 days along with fellow sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.

In total, pilots completed more than 1,300 launches and recoveries even as Truman sailors and CVW-3 personnel participated in a multitude of shipboard training scenarios, both on the flight deck and in the hangar bay.

After disembarking, CVW-3 is scheduled to conduct advanced tactical training in Fallon, Nev., until mid-December. Truman is scheduled to continue training in preparation for an upcoming composite training unit exercise. Stewart joined the Navy in October 2009.

 

Todd finishes task force exercise

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class James G. Todd, grandson of James and Sue Crisman, of Crown Point, completed Joint Task Force Exercise in 3rd Fleet area of responsibilities along with fellow sailors aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Shoup.

JTFEX is designed to test a strike group's ability to operate in hostile and complex environments with other U.S. and coalition forces. The integrated exercise combines specific warfare areas with the purpose of making preparations for the strike group's upcoming deployment. More than 8,000 sailors worked together to hone their operational skills in preparation for their upcoming deployment.

Todd is a 2010 graduate of Snohomish High School of Snohomish, Wash., and joined the Navy in March 2011.

 

Jackson completes basic training

Navy Seaman Steven W. Jackson, son of Jamesa D. Humphrey, of Calumet Park, and Steven W. Jackson, of Chicago, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Jackson completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.

Jackson is a 2009 graduate of Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory High School in Chicago.
