Beginning Wednesday, a section of the Calumet Trail near the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be temporarily closed so NIPSCO can upgrade underground natural gas lines in the area.

The 4.5-mile section from East State Park Boundary Road to Mineral Springs Road will be closed through October 31, according to a news release from the utility company.

This project is one of the existing and future investments planned as part of NIPSCO's long-term effort to modernize the gas and electric infrastructure across its entire service area, the release stated.

NIPSCO is working with Porter County officials and other agencies to ensure proper signs and notices are provided on both approaches of the closure, the utility company said.

People who travel near construction areas are asked to exercise caution to ensure personal safety and the safety of construction crews working on this project, the release stated.

The pedestrian crossing from the South Shore Line’s Dune Park Station to the Indiana Dunes State Park will remain open, but will be within the construction work zone, NIPSCO said in the release.

Environmental surveys for the project were completed to fully assess environmentally sensitive features within the proximity of the project. As with every project, NIPSCO’s project team worked with the regulating agencies and local stakeholders to avoid and minimize environmental impacts.
