CHESTERTON | A Purdue University student from Chesterton was seriously injured Monday after crashing into a Lafayette city bus, police said.

Andrew Fant, a sophomore, was riding his bicycle at 11:20 a.m. east on Memorial Mall on campus when he crashed into the driver's side of a bus, said Jeanne Norberg, spokeswoman for Purdue University police.

Norberg said Fant was entering the road from a grassy area when the crash happened. She said a video from the bus captured Fant wearing headphones and looking down.

He was taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health. Norberg did not have information about his condition Wednesday afternoon.

"It's just heartbreaking when something like this happens," Norberg said.

On Facebook, a post circulated Wednesday asking people to pray for Fant's recovery.
