Soil health and cover crops will be the focus of the fourth annual Cover Crops Field Day sponsored by the Porter Co. Soil & Water Conservation District and partners at the Natural Resources Conservation Service & Purdue Cooperative Extension of Porter County.
The event will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Simatovich Elementary School, 424 W. County Road 600 West, Valparaiso.
“This is a great local opportunity for farmers to hear experts from around the state and to get a firsthand look at several types of cover crops planted late last summer in a Porter County field,” Porter County SWCD Chairman Jim Lambert said in a news release.
Scheduled to speak are Hans Kok, coordinator of the Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative; Jamie Scott, secretary of the Indiana Association of SWCDs and longtime cover cropper; and Dan Perkins, Jasper County SWCD, known as, “The Cover Crop Guy.”
Credits will be available through the Extension Service for pesticide applicators and crop advisers.
Although the field day is free, reservations are requested by Monday to plan for lunch, which is being sponsored by the CISCO Companies, Farm Credit Mid America and 1st Source Bank.
