The Cemetery Club, Season of the Witch, Jerry's Girls, Leader of the Pack, Grease and Footloose are all past performances that have come to life right in our own fair city courtesy of our own Portage Community Theatre.
In 2001, a young woman's life was cut short, her name was Samantha Anne Hodsden. She was one of four children in the Hodsden family who had a love for theatre. She performed in many casts in her brief life here at Portage High School and at Ball State University. In her honor and memory the Portage Community Theatre was born. Her family and friends have strived to bring performance theatre to the city of Portage.
The organization's mission is to bring opportunities for Portage-area residents to embrace and actively engage in all facets of performance theatre.
Of course that can include acting in theatrical productions, set-building, costumes, make-up, music and dance or being part of the audience. They nurture unique talents and abilities, and aspire to inject their passion into every cast member, every audience member, and every individual that has been touched by the performing arts. This, of course, directly effects our quality of life and enhances a cultural awareness in our community.
Portage Community Theatre has a new cast that is starting rehearsals later this month for a new production. They are having a fundraiser this Saturday at the Portage Yacht Club, 1370 Indiana 249. It's Karaoke Night from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.
The cover is a mere $5 and will go to support future theatrical productions. A cash bar and snacks will be available for purchase in case you work up an appetite or need to wet your whistle during all that singing you're going to be doing at this great event. Although I really don't profess to be a great singer, I've been known to get up and do a duet with my karaoke- krazy hubby.
He can really belt some of those good old tunes out that we grew up to years ago. Just think of this event as a great way to get out of the house and let your hair down with friends and family for a low, low price. All ages are welcome, however, individuals younger than 21 will not be permitted in the bar area and smoking is prohibited in the building.
The Portage Community Theatre is also always accepting donations in the way of cash or items they could use for their productions such as old prom dresses, vintage clothing, hats, gloves, boots, shoes, glasses, pocket watches, ties, suspenders, jewelry, a sewing machine, book shelves, file cabinets, paint brushes, nails, screws, glue guns, furniture and a multitude of other things that you can see on their website, www.portagecommunitytheatre.org.
