VALPARAISO | A new online option for filing tax assessment appeals has proven to be a hit in Porter County.
About half of the 550 appeals filed as of the end of last week came in through www.portercountyassessor.com -- set up this year by Porter County Assessor Jon Snyder.
The remaining 250 appeals were delivered by hand and 75 percent of those have been resolved through informal hearings, he said.
The 25 percent of the appeals not resolved were referred to the Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals.
"This is the way the system is supposed to work," Snyder said.
The goal is to resolve as many of the appeals as possible before tax bills are mailed out the following spring, he said. That way the county is not having to take the extra step of sending out refunds.
Most of the appeals filed so far have been residential and the numbers are tapering off, Snyder said.
The commercial appeals are typically handled by tax representatives, who usually wait until just before the deadline to file.
This year's appeal deadline is the end of the work day Nov. 21.
