VALPARAISO | Despite facing a mountain of property assessment appeals when he took office earlier this year, Porter County Assessor Jon Snyder is taking steps to make the filing process easier.
Snyder hopes to offer taxpayers the ability to file appeals online by the time assessments are mailed out in September or October.
He asked the Porter County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to approve a contract with Golden Technologies of Valparaiso for up to $15,000 to provide the online service.
At the request of Commission President John Evans, R-North, the request was granted with the stipulation it is first cleared by the county information technologies department.
IT Director Sharon Lippens told Snyder she would get back with him by Friday.
Snyder, who hopes to offer the service this fall, said appeals still will be accepted in person.
"The taxpayers can still come here, we always welcome that," he said.
Taxpayers have 45 days to appeal assessments once they are mailed out by the county, Snyder said.
The proposed contract also calls for an update of the assessor's site and for providing taxpayers with the option to file information about their properties online, he said. This would offer an alternative to having to pay for postage and mail back the questionnaires left at homes by his office.
