VALPARAISO | Porter County Auditor Bob Wichlinski confirmed Friday his son works for a firm hired by the county this past summer to help his office address homestead deductions.
Wichlinski said he filed the proper conflict of interest form with the county clerk's office when the Porter County Board of Commissioners signed the contract with SRI Inc. that he presented to them in August.
"There's nothing tawdry here," he said.
Wichlinski said his son, David Wichlinski, was assigned by the company to address the more than 8,000 property owners, who failed to respond to the pink forms in their tax bills verifying their right to a homestead deduction.
"I don't make the assignments," Bob Wichlinski said.
Wichlinski said SRI has been doing business with the county long before he took office in 2011. The firm was hired by the county treasurer's office to handle tax sales and online tax payments, he said.
SRI also was hired this year to help the auditor's office pursue the 900 property owners believed to be improperly receiving the homestead deduction.
Attempts to reach county commissioners Friday were unsuccessful.
