Five local students are among 2,500 high school students across the country who won National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.
The local winners are Elizabeth Benson, of Beverly Shores; Kelsey Hopkins, of Crown Point; Emma Hong, of Munster; Peter Kraft, of Munster; and Timothy Lavelle, of Schererville.
Benson, a Chesterton High School student, is interested in veterinary medicine.
Hopkins, who attends Crown Point High School, plans to major in chemical engineering.
Hong and Kraft are Munster High School students. Hong likely will major in public policy and Kraft's probable major is science/research.
Lavelle, who attends Marian Catholic High School, plans to major in biomedical engineering.
The 2,500 scholarship winners were selected from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.
