BEVERLY SHORES | A Portage man was charged with theft and fraud after police said he stole checks from a popular Duneland eatery.
Eric Rajski, 37, of Portage, was charged with two counts of felony forgery and one count of felony theft, according to documents filed earlier this week in Porter Superior Court.
The owner of Bartlett's Gourmet Grill and Tavern, 131 E. Dunes Highway, told Beverly Shores police May 15 that he had discovered several checks missing from a checkbook kept at the restaurant, documents state.
The owner said Rajski, a former employee, was seen in the restaurant around the last time he saw the checkbook, documents state.
Police began an investigation and learned from the restaurant's bank that six checks were recently made payable to Rajski. While four of those checks resulted in no cash payment, two were successfully cashed for a total of $2,400.
Investigators said they obtained snapshots from security cameras at the banks where the checks were cashed. The restaurant owner identified Rajski as the man attempting to make the withdrawals, documents state.
