CHESTERTON | A semitrailer burst into flames after crashing into a wall early Wednesday on Interstate 94, causing troopers to close nearby lanes for three hours.
The crash happened at 4:51 a.m. as Mijalce Karanakov, 55, of Crown Point, was driving a 2005 Volvo semitrailer in the westbound lanes of I-94 near the Burns Harbor/Porter exit, Indiana State Police said.
For unknown reasons, Karanakov swerved to the right as lanes were shifting to the left because of construction, police said. He hit the outer shoulder barrier wall, went across two westbound lanes and then hit the inside shoulder barrier wall.
The impact of the crash caused the semi to catch on fire, police said. Karanakov was able to get out of the truck and was not injured. There weren't any other vehicles involved in the crash.
Troopers temporarily closed eastbound and westbound lanes. All lanes were reopened just before 8 a.m.
Karanakov was cited for unsafe lane movement, police said. His semitrailer was empty.
