CHESTERTON | The Town Council on Monday unanimously approved a plan to add more trees between streets and sidewalks.
Nate Orsburn, the president of the town's tree committee, presented a plan for more trees in the town's rights of way that involves public and government participation.
A resident can acquire a 6- to 8-foot tree at a cost of $75. The resident would need to apply for the tree and provide maintenance and care. The street department would plant the tree.
Council member James Ton said the plan is good for residents and the town.
In other business, Assistant Fire Chief John Jarka thanked town officials for the opportunity to go to New York to help with Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts for 12 days. The council thanked him for his service.
In his report, Town Engineer Mark O’Dell said a plan to extend the Westchester Liberty trail west on 1100 North from 11th Street to an existing sidewalk made it through first stage of the Lake Michigan Coastal Grant application process. Officials now will submit a formal proposal due in January.
Additionally, the council unanimously adopted an ordinance to authorize a temporary loan from the Chesterton sewer utility.
