CHESTERTON | Chesterton has been awarded a federal Creating Livable Communities grant of $24,000 for planning and design of the Calumet Connection/Dunes Kankakee Trail Project.
The news was delivered to the Town Council on Monday by Councilman Jim Ton, who also is the treasurer for the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission.
The grant funds will be paired with $6,000 in local money for the trail project. Ton thanked several people who were instrumental in the award, including Town Manager Bernie Doyle and the Engineering Department.
“We are pleased to support your work and encourage the following recommendations to make it an even stronger Livable Center — work with the Town of Porter to improve bike connectivity and access to the South Shore station and reach out to NIRPC’s TAP or the (Department of Natural Resources) Coastal Program for pre-engineering funds,” said Tyson Warner, NIRPC executive director, in a letter to the town.
In other business, Police Chief David Cincoski reported Street Commissioner John Schnadenberg received the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police Community Service Award for his 26 years of service.
Cincoski also said police dispatch is now ready to merge with the town of Porter’s dispatch.
“We will be looking at getting the official move done in the next six to eight weeks," Cincoski said.
“With all that transition, we will be reordering our records management and computer-aided dispatch software to go with what the rest of the county is going on," he said.
The council unanimously agreed to fund the upgrade.
Schnadenberg also updated the council on how the town has dealt with winter weather.
“We have made it to the 60-inch mark with snow this year, and we still have quite a few weeks to go,” Schnadenberg said.
He said one of the difficulties is in plowing alleys, which had to be cleared using a front-end loader. He asked residents to dig their garbage cans out so they are accessible for waste removal vehicles.
Mark O’Dell, town engineer, said he has received an agreement with CSX for the Indian Boundary Calumet Avenue signal upgrade. The project is set for a June letting.
