CHESTERTON | Town Board member Jeff Trout clarified issues regarding the Ind. 49 utility corridor project since, he said, misinformation has been circulating.
Trout said he presented the Porter County Board of Commissioners the revised pricing for the proposed county extension from the new Porter hospital site north to the end of Chesterton’s corporate limit -- which came in less than expected during bid opening last month.
He said the commissioners voted to make the county’s portion of the utility project a CEDIT project to be voted on at the next County Council meeting.
“I got some information from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission hearing held in 2011 and Charlie Ray of the Duneland Group said that Damon Run doesn’t have capacity for development north of the hospital to the Toll Road," Trout said.
"He said, and I quote: ‘The way I look at it is that the force main and everything has been sized to handle development immediately surrounding the hospital area. To go (east) of 49 we would have to upsize lift stations and some other things to be able to do that,’” Trout added.
Trout said Liberty Township residents are being misled about capacity.
"There is a large area we are encompassing, so we are complimenting what is there, not competing with it,” he said.
In other business, Dave Novak, building commissioner, asked council members to revisit the town’s ordinance on pools. He has been receiving a number of phone calls from residents.
“We’re seeing a lot more of these inflatable portable pools go up and down. Anything over 2 feet of water is considered a permanent pool, which requires a permit, fence, and also affects electrical requirements, so there are other factors that come into play and it’s hard to enforce,” Novak said.
Council member Sharon Darnell warned residents are responsible for fencing in their pools so other children are not in danger.
Novak said he has researched how other communities handle these pools.
