CHESTERTON | The Chesterton Town Council took action Monday on bringing Urschel Laboratories to town, approving an ordinance to authorize issuing up to $25.86 million in economic development revenue bonds for the company's new manufacturing facility as well as a corporate headquarters at Coffee Creek Center.
It also passed a resolution on first reading to take 157 acres out of the original TIF area, and then passed another resolution to set that land as a new TIF district, which was a legal requirement due to technicalities involving expiration of those TIFs.
There will be a public hearing on the resolutions at 6 p.m. March 11 at Town Hall.
“There have been a lot of details to this, but we’re getting near the end of the road,” said Attorney Chuck Lukmann. Urschel officials attended the meeting.
The project is anticipated to bring in 100 full-time construction jobs for the build out over a course of two to three years, resulting in 15 to 20 additional permanent full-time jobs.
In other business, four cars ordered earlier in the year for the Police Department have arrived and will be street-ready in one month after being outfitted, said Police Chief Dave Cincoski, who also introduced the newest member of the force, Patrolman Michael Manion.
The council agreed to go out to bid for annual paving projects at the request of Street Commissioner John Schnadenberg. He also requested purchasing a department dump truck from Truck City of Gary for $149,082, which the council approved.
In closing comments, Councilman Jim Ton complimented the Duneland Business Initiative Group for keeping the Wizard of Oz Festival going as long as it did and said he empathized with their reasons for no longer continuing the festival.
