CHESTERTON | The Chesterton Police Department communications center has moved to the Porter Police Department at 50 Francis St. in Porter.
Chesterton Police Chief David Cincoski said the move will not affect the continuity or effectiveness of police services.
Chesterton residents can still request police services by calling the regular Police Department telephone number of (219) 926-1136, or in an emergency 911.
Cincoski said most weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will still be personnel at the Chesterton Police Department, 790 Broadway, to accept walk-in traffic and requests for police services, background checks and requests for reports.
Outside of those hours and on weekends, there will be a telephone in the Chesterton Police Department lobby that will ring directly to the new dispatch center for walk-in police traffic.
Residents also may go to the Porter Police Department to request police services.
The Chesterton Town Hall still will be available as a warming and cooling shelter during adverse weather conditions, Cincoski said.
Any requests for use of the Town Hall meeting room need to be directed to the on-duty personnel or using the lobby telephone to contact an officer and arrange access.
Anyone with questions may call the Chesterton Police Department at (219) 926-1136.
