The Indiana Natural Resources Commission on Tuesday approved allowing the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages at the Indiana Dunes State Park pavilion.
The rule change goes to the attorney general and governor for final approval. If approved, the rule would go into effect 30 days after publication in the Indiana Register.
The move follows a 2012 ruling by the NRC authorizing the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to enter negotiations for a restaurant, snack bar and service area in the pavilion.
The IDNR said if the change is approved, alcohol will continue to be prohibited elsewhere at the park.
The NRC also gave initial approval Tuesday to a change in the IDNR law enforcement rules establishing boating restrictions on portions of Lake Michigan in East Chicago adjacent to the Jeorse Park Beach swimming area and in Gary next to the Marquette Park Beach swimming area.
That rule change is open for public comment and will have a public hearing scheduled at a later date, according to a statement issued by the IDNR.
The NRC must still give the proposed changes final adoption after the public comment period ends.
