CHESTERTON | Police said a woman spotted driving her minivan into people's yards Saturday had a blood alcohol content more than four times the legal limit and two children in the car.
Chesterton police responded to the area of Wabash Avenue and Locust street for an erratic driving report about 7:30 p.m. Saturday .
Police found the minivan and spotted the vehicle driving off the road and into people's lawns, then nearly hitting a tree trimming crew.
The van was stopped at 8th Street and Wabash Avenue, where police said the 37-year-old driver had difficulty putting the van into park.
As they spoke to the woman, officers said she smelled of alcohol and had red, watery eyes and slurred speech. She also had her crying 8-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son in the car, officers said.
The woman subsequently failed a series of field sobriety tests and was found with a 0.34 blood alcohol content.
Police said the woman, on probation for a DUI conviction four years ago, was taken to an area hospital after voicing suicidal thoughts.
The woman, who was not arrested, faces a series of drunken driving charges, police said.
