We’ve had a busy year here in the Information and Education Technology Department at Duneland School Corp.
We have successfully implemented Skyward, the new student information system. It contains everything that happens in our school corporation. From grades to graduations. Medical alerts to missing assignments.
We used it to eliminate paper work at registration last August. It didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped, but we evaluated and we tinkered. When all the hammers and duct tape were put away we decided that we could do better. We will do better. All in all, that’s just a small piece of what we are going to start doing.
We’ve come a long way in five years since I’ve taken the position as the director of Information and Technology at Duneland School Corp. Almost all of that progress, has nothing to do with me. It’s more about the teachers and staff.
All IT Department does is provide master craftsmen with the tools that help them ply their trade. Granted, it’s not always their favorite brand nor does it work exactly the way their one at home does, but there are a lot of variables to satisfy when you’re dealing with over 300 staff members and about 6,000 students.
The funny thing about it is, despite our setbacks, if you’re a student, parent, or teacher chances are you want more. You want more ability and flexibility to complete your tasks and earn better grades. You want more opportunities for your student to succeed. You probably want more ability in your classroom to reach your students in a manner that engages them.
This year we’ll be implementing several improvements to Skyward. Online registration? Check. Online fee payment, we’ve got that too. Increasing our 1:1 footprint (device for every student), I think we can accommodate that.
We are also working on more online course content. Maybe even full online curriculum and content for both our teachers and student friends. Bottom line, we are doing things that we hope everyone will love. I’m excited for where we’re going and with any luck, you are too.
