CHESTERTON | New Duneland School Corp. teachers and administrators who will begin their positions next month met Thursday night with the School Board.
Michael Megyesi, who was hired with unanimous board approval as principal of Chesterton Middle School, lives in the district and comes from Washington Township Middle School and High School, where he has served for the past three years as assistant principal and athletic director. Prior to that he was assistant principal and dean of students at Griffith High School.
“I’m truly excited an honored to be given this opportunity, so thank you,” said Megyesi, whose family and several members of his new staff were in attendance.
In other business, Duneland Superintendent Dirk Baer made a recommendation, which was unanimously supported by the School Board, to inquire about traffic flow with the new Porter Hospital opening Aug. 25, especially with school beginning Aug. 26.
“There are some concerns with traffic flow with the new hospital, and with 3,000 to 4,000 new vehicles in and out of that hospital a day near our bus barn, we have prepared a letter to INDOT to inquire about their traffic plans in that area,” Baer said about new hospital at Ind. 49 and U.S. 6.
Board member Ralph Ayres said, “Hopefully, provisions will be made in the short term and if they are not, certainly I hope they will in the long-term.”
Assistant Superintendent David Pruis presented numbers for the 2013 proposed budget capital projects fund with expenditures, allocations and transfers totaling $10.4 million.
The capital projects fund includes land acquisition and development; building acquisition, construction and improvement; purchase of mobile or fixed equipment; utilities; rental of buildings, facilities, and equipment; technology; emergency allocations; maintenance of equipment; professional services; and property and casualty insurance.
Baer announced the resignation of Mark McKibben, who served 19 years as director of special services. McKibben and his wife will move to Colorado to be closer to family.
“He has certainly been a tremendous asset to our school corporation. Anything Mark has done has been done with quality and integrity. We wish him well,” said Baer, who presented McKibben with a framed photo of Chesterton High School, the $74 million project he oversaw more than 10 years ago.
“It’s been the experience of a lifetime, and I can’t say enough about the district,” McKibben said.
