CHESTERTON | The Duneland Family YMCA will host its annual Sweetheart Dinner Dance at 6 p.m. Saturday at Sand Creek Country Club.
The event will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 and dance music to follow. The cost is $55 per person and includes dinner, dancing, and entertainment.
For many people within the Duneland communit,y this event is a night to enjoy friends and their sweetheart. This event provides entertainment for those who attend but so much more for the community as a whole.
The Duneland Family YMCA is a charitable nonprofit focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. In each area of focus there are people in the Duneland community who are impacted through programs, financial assistance, and partnerships designed to meet community needs.
In 2012, Paul and Nancy Zlamal visited the Duneland Family YMCA for their daily workout. Nancy Zlamal insisted that Paul talk with the on duty Porter Regional Hospital Community Health nurse, Laurie Whehner-Evans, about his recent chest pains. Whehner-Evans informed the Zlamals about cardiac screenings available at Porter Regional Hospital and suggested that he have one immediately.
The following week, Zlamal underwent triple bypass surgery because two of his arteries in his heart were 100 percent block with the third 94 percent blocked. That day a partnership between the Duneland Family YMCA and Porter Regional Hospital saved a life.
Stories like Zlamal's keep the Duneland Family YMCA mission alive to provide programs in the community.
Reservations for the Sweetheart Dinner Dance can be made Monday at the Duneland Family YMCA, 215 Roosevelt St., or by calling (219) 926-4204.
