CHESTERTON | Firefighters fought a smoky two-alarm fire at a condominiums on the town's west side Monday.
Firefighters were called at 12:18 p.m. Monday to the 2100 block of Dogwood Lane and found smoke billowing from the roof line of a six-unit building in the Westchester Village on the Green complex, Chesterton Fire Chief Mike Orlich said.
Thick white smoke poured from one of the vinyl-sided two-story buildings as firefighters worked to find the source amid blistering winds and sleet.
Orlich said the fire caused moderate damage to two units and lighter damage to another two condos.
From preliminary reports, the fire appears accidental, he said.
"It appears to have been a possible electrical malfunction from a fixture in the wall," Orlich said.
The fire displaced four families, who received assistance from the American Red Cross. Orlich said two families likely will be able to move back in this week, while the other two may be out of their homes a while longer because of an estimated $200,000 in structural damage.
Firefighters from Porter, Liberty Township, Burns Harbor, Pines, Beverly Shores, Valparaiso, Portage, South Haven and Washington Townships assisted at the scene, along with Porter Emergency Medical Services and Chesterton police.
