CHESTERTON | The Tailgater 5K is a new Run/Walk event on Super Bowl Sunday that will benefit Chesterton’s 4th Street Theater and encourage people to get out and exercise on one of the biggest eating holidays of the year.
According to the Snack Food Association, Americans double their average daily consumption of snacks on Super Bowl Sunday, consuming more than 33 million pounds of goodies in one day and spending more than $50 million on snack food for the day’s festivities.
"If people can get excited about going out on Thanksgiving morning for a Turkey Trot or Pumpkin Plod, then we figured they can also get out before the Super Bowl, do something healthy to start the day and earn their spot on the couch," said Bob Craig, race director for the Tailgater 5K.
The race starts at 8 a.m. on Feb. 2 on South Fifth Street, between Morgan and Porter avenues. Race day registration will be available from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.
The event is also the goal race for the No Boundaries Beginner Running Program that is currently training at Franciscan Omni Health and Fitness in Chesterton and at Fleet Feet Sports in Schererville.
"This is fantastic beginner running program," said Misty Chandos, director of training programs at Fleet Feet Sports in Schererville. "We chose this race as our goal race because it really encourages people to think about making healthy choices on day that features some pretty unhealthy food options."
The Tailgater 5K will be professionally timed by T&H Timing of Valparaiso and awards will be presented to the overall winners and the top three male and female age group finishers.
Entry fees for the race are $25. Registration forms for mail-in registration are available at Extra Mile Fitness, 1330 E. Lincolnway in Valparaiso, and at Fleet Feet Sports, 635 U.S. 30 in Schererville. Online registration is now open at https://www.signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/96457
