CHESTERTON | A LaPorte man remains in critical condition after being struck Friday by a pickup truck on U.S. 20.
Ronnie Garner, 35, was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital following the incident.
According to police, Melvin Waldo, 61, of LaPorte, was driving eastbound on U.S. 20 near the intersection of Harrison Road about 11:15 p.m. Friday when he struck what he initially thought was a deer in the road. Waldo told police he attempted to brake and swerve.
When Waldo realized what he struck was a person, he turned around and found Garner lying on the ground, unresponsive. Waldo called 911.
Garner sustained internal and head injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Waldo was taken to Porter Regional Hospital for drug and alcohol tests. The results of the tests were negative.
