CHESTERTON | Firefighters from the Chesterton Volunteer Fire Department and Firefighters Local 4600 donated a new evacuation crib for use at the Duneland Family YMCA Preschool. The crib enables staff to quickly and safely evacuate infants when minutes and seconds count most. The durable duty crib is equipped with heavy duty casters so it can easily be rolled to safety in the event of an emergency.

"The gift of this crib is especially meaningful for our program because it will enable us to easily evacuate our sweet babies in a more efficient manner," said Jessica Macius, coordinator for Duneland YMCA's Preschool and School Age Child Care programs. "Although, we have not experienced a fire emergency, we do practice on a monthly basis to keep staff and children prepared."

The infant and one-year-old classrooms focus on what most parents focus on with their children of that age: learning how to walk, talk, play, share and dance. Flash cards, songs, books, Sign Language, discovery and hands-on crafts are integrated throughout the process.

“The amount of development that we have seen since Reese has been with the YMCA is incredible," said Allison Holda, mother to 1-year-old Reese. "She joined at approximately 10 months and we have seen nothing but growth. Her motor skills and verbal skills have vastly improved, and her social skills have increased immeasurably. Reese is always excited to go see all the other children and the assistants in the one year old room. We are incredibly happy with the level of attention and activities that the YMCA participates in, as well as the involvement in the community. We highly recommend them to everyone who asks where we send our daughter to daycare, even to those who don’t ask.”

Quality child care is the top priority at the Early Childhood Development Center, and is achieved by providing children as young as six weeks of age with creative learning experiences that help them develop and ultimately gain the skills necessary for Kindergarten.

The Early Childhood Development Center is located within Chesterton Middle School, Entrance No. 8. Call (219) 921-0183 to schedule a tour.
